Make a date with BBC Two this Saturday night

Forget hitting the town this weekend and choose the sofa instead, because BBC Two is screening 2011’s My Week With Marilyn, the must-see biopic that follows Marilyn Monroe’s 1956 trip to England.

Michelle Williams plays Monroe, who causes a stir when she comes to the UK to work on The Prince and the Showgirl. Everyone’s excited to meet her, but things soon start to go wrong – Monroe is nervous and unreliable, and director Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) starts to lose patience. In the midst of the tension, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young production runner (Eddie Redmayne) – but can he help her find her way out of trouble?

Williams earned an Oscar nomination for her performance, which captures not just Monroe’s irresistible star-quality but also just how fragile she was. There’s no substitute for a real Marilyn Monroe movie – but this comes pretty close.
