The Beauty of Braids

The Beauty of Braids

Sculptured braids are stealing the spotlight

Elaborate braided styles are making a mark this season. Think towering looks that defy gravity, fixed into beautiful shapes and patterns. These striking hairstyles primarily find their roots across Africa and the Caribbean, and now a number of celebrities are celebrating this heritage.

FKA Twig’s inaugural issue of insta-zine AVANTgarden saw intricately braided hair take centre stage. Entitled ROOTS.SHOCK.BEAUTY, each spread revealed styles that weaved vivid colour with twisting cornrows and delicate plaits. In celebrating these striking looks FKA Twigs paid homage to Afro hairstyling, where braids act as a medium for self-expression and protection.

‘I think for me, braids as a protective hairstyle and something that’s been passed down through our heritage, is amazing to embrace.” FKA Twigs told Dazed

Similarly, Solange Knowles rocked striking architectural crowns whilst promoting her album A Seat at the Table. Styled by Avant-hairstylist Joanne Petit- Frère, these spectacular styles celebrate an impressive history of hair artistry within black culture. ‘[Braiding is] an act of beauty, an act of convenience and an act of tradition — it is ‘its own art form,’” she told ES Magazine.

To replicate these show-stopping styles, book a Fashion Fix appointment at your nearest participating Toni&Guy salon.
