Cocktails get nerdy at the opening of The Alchemist in Liverpool

Housed in a grade II listed building that dates back to 1799, The Alchemist brings its extensive cocktail repertoire and tasty grub to its first Liverpool outpost, right in the centre of the financial district.

What makes The Alchemist different from your average cocktail bar is its scientific approach to mixology. Elixirs are prepared and served in test tubes while revellers can choose their poison straight from a periodic table-themed menu. Modern takes on much-loved classics include the Smokey Old Fashioned - using Woodford Reserve Whiskey, maple syrup, bitters and special ingredient smoke - and the intriguingly named Bubblebath - a concoction of Tanqueray gin, Aperol, Chambord, Lemon, Apple and Fairy Liquid.

Visitors can also settle in for brunch, lunch or dinner, choosing from a menu of traditional pub fare including proper bacon butties and fish finger sandwiches. While those with a more adventurous palette can tuck into Japanese ramen spiced broth chased up with something sweet.

Wannabe master mixologis can sign up for a cocktail masterclass to learn the history behind the cocktail, as well as trying their hand at making their own signature recipe.

The Alchemist Liverpool is open now for bookings. 5 Brunswick Street, L2 0UU
