Olivier Rousteing X NikeLab
Balmain’s creative director has got his eye on the ball with a new footie inspired collection
As the head of French fashion house Balmain, Olivier Rousteing has already made his mark since joining in 2013, reinterpreting its trademark elite couture status into high-end fashion for the masses. Last year’s sell out collection in collaboration with H&M catapulted the 30-year-old to industry famousness, with a collection that transcended through the designer crowds to the style savvy high street shopper.
His next mission is to tackle sportswear, in particular football gear, with the aim of fusing functionality with fashion. Pairing up with NikeLab, Rousteing has taken his cues from the lifestyles of professional footballers and this summer’s upcoming European championship. The result is a Football Nouveau collection that will come as part of NikeLab’s Summer of Sport Series.
Renowned Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo acted as Rousteing’s muse with a pair of shoes designed to mimic the Mercurial Superfly that Ronaldo wears on-pitch. The unisex collection will also reinvent Nike Football Icon signature pieces including the adding side zip pockets to the N98 track jacket and updating the NikeLab top with on trend mesh detailing. The signature Balmain aesthetic is prominent throughout - think gold accents, slick cuts and baroque-style embellishment.
Hit the pitch for some five aside when the collection hits stores and goes online on the 2nd June.
