Brave New World
Marvel at the work of influential husband and wife design duo, Charles and Ray Eames
The 20th Century will be remembered as a period that pushed the envelope of design. Momentum picked up during the 1950s and 1960s when the final frontier of space was conquered and the public became obsessed with an imagined version of the future. Sci-fi television shows were at their height of popularity, fashion became fluid and abstract and plane travel was now a reality for the masses.
At the forefront were husband and wife, Charles and Ray Eames; Americans who experimented with photography, film, architecture and product design – innovative designs that captured the zeitgeist of this exciting time. So influential were their creations, many continue to be mass-produced for department stores today.
Now the Barbican plays host to a large-scale exhibition, ‘The World Of Charles and Ray Eames’, which includes not only their most famous designs but also personal letter, sketches, multi-media installations and pieces of furniture to bring their legacy to life.
