Meet Nina Deckers, founder of LAZUL, London’s most glamorous swimwear line
With a focus on quality fabrics and exotic prints, LAZUL has fast become the go-to for luxury swimwear. Nina Deckers, who launched the brand in 2012, drew from her family’s 30 years’ experience of manufacturing swimwear from their factory in Portugal. Nina splits her time between London and Ibiza.
What sets LAZUL apart from other swimwear brands? I saw a gap in the market for detailed, high-end swimwear that fits well. I wanted something fashion-led, with the kinds of details that we seek in ready-to-wear, but that aren’t usually available in swimwear. I also wanted to create silk pieces that can be worn from day to evening, to reduce the packing we have to do – that’s why none of our cover-ups are transparent.
What’s your typical work routine? I work partly from Ibiza. When I’m there, I get up at 6.30am, have coffee, check my emails and plan the day. I go for a swim at 8.30am, and by the time I get back my London team is in the office. Usually it’s pretty chaotic and there is always a mountain of work to do.
Who are your beachwear icons? There are incredible beach pictures of Faye Dunaway, Farrah Fawcett, Sophia Loren and Goldie Hawn
What’s new for S/S 15? Softer tones, beautiful prints, trims handmade in Austria, tassels and fringes made in Italy and bespoke hardware with enamel. It’s about details that make a woman stand out.
What’s the best part of your job? Searching the world for ideas and artisan things, and forming a concept for the new season with my team.
What’s next for LAZUL? We’re planning to conquer Australia and the Far East, and open our first store.
Any tips for looking fabulous on the beach? Only buy what makes you feel sexy. Be bold and wear printed cover-ups that you wouldn’t wear in the city. Double them up as an evening outfit with a clutch and heels.
