Field Day

Rich colour, cool braids, bold eyes and a bare face make for the holy grail of festival style

Colour

This colour story is all about creating a subtle-looking blush of colour that works with the hair’s natural tones to give depth and contrast. Colour is applied to mid-lengths and ends only, alternating between interior sections and outer sections, thus avoiding obvious regrowth and demarcation lines. It’s ideal for those who’ve never had colour before and those wanting a low-maintenance, fuss-free look. The techniques adopted by Toni&Guy International Technical Director Jo O’Neill, using L’Oréal Professionnel INOA, create a very subtle, modern take on the ombré effect – the coloured sections appear almost spotlighted, and lend a kind of interior glow to the hair. Our models had straight, naturally mid-brown to dark-brown hair, but this technique works well on wavy hair and blondes, too.

Style

To prep, Toni&Guy International Artistic Director Mattia Esposito ran a little label.m Volume Mousse through damp hair. A spritz of label.m Sea Salt Spray gave the hair traction ready for plaiting and added definition to the finished looks. Finally, label.m Hairspray ensured the braids stayed put. Mattia also used L’Oréal Professionnel and Rowenta Salon’s Steampod professional straightening tool to gloss and straighten hair where necessary – see the top area of Cassy’s hair (above). The glossing effect of the Steampod really enhanced the rich cognac tones which Toni&Guy International Technical Director Jo O’Neill created. Fun, modern and brilliantly practical (if you deploy enough mousse and hairspray, that is), summer braids are the perfect way to showcase a new colour treatment – just see the soft, caramac hues on model Alex’s locks (main image). Now all we need is a little bit of sunshine...
