Meet Madeleine Moxham, the young London designer garnering attention for her statement jewellery and accessories brand Moxham
What’s your earliest design related memory? Family outings to The Design Museum followed by pizza. I’ve seen some brilliant exhibitions there from Hussein Chalayan to Paul Smith.
When did you know it was time to set up Moxham? I don’t know if you ever really know but I did an MA at Nottingham Trent with the sole intention of starting a business once I had graduated.
What’s your studio set-up like? I work from my family home in Camberwell, which is around the corner from my flat. Who wants to spend their time commuting? What’s on your studio playlist? I like to listen to Woman’s Hour on Radio 4 in the morning, which isn't very rock & roll.
What are the rules when styling statement accessories? I would say keep it simple. We have recently teamed up with Whistles and its laid-back, minimalist style is a perfect fit.
What’s your most prized accessory? I love our Moxham headdresses as they are a contemporary way to dress up and I’m very pleased with my new Comme Des Garçons pouch.
What’s the last thing you saw that made you say ‘wow’? I just spotted the A/W 14 Ellery mules and absolutely love them. How do you dream up your designs? Often I sit down with the materials and experiment with shapes and repetition.
What's new for S/S 14? We’ve turned to laser cut, powder coated metal to create some lighter, more structural pieces. Minimalist sculptors Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Sol LeWitt were a big inspiration. What’s your favourite part of the job? The variety. I think one of the reasons I started my own business is that there are so many things I enjoy and with Moxham I get to do them all.
How do you wind down? I drink wine with friends, hang out with my family, read the papers and paint my nails. What's happening next at Moxham? There are too many things to mention – this year is going to be busy! Follow us on twitter @MOXHAMSTORE to keep up.
Moxham is stocked at Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Whistles, Kabiri and moxhamstore.com
